A House for Lincoln was a Masterclass for the National Saturday Club in Hull, that Madeleine Kessler and Manijeh Verghese were invited to teach by the National Saturday Club. The students were exploring a year long brief to create A House for Lincoln (based upon A House for Essex). Inspired by Grayson Perry’s working method at embedding narratives in different objects to tell an overall story, we asked the students to design a series of objects for A House for Lincoln. As something between architecture and furniture, we asked the students to consider the scale of each object to determine the inhabitation of the interior of the house. Students were asked to question who is their client, what is the story they are telling with this piece about the protagonist and about Lincoln, how does it sit within the house, how should it be used? Using quick materials like paper tape, cardboard and paint, they fashioned new forms of architecture at a variety of scales that will suggest new ways to communicate and inhabit this house and Lincoln itself.

The National Saturday Club is a free programme that gives 13–16-year-olds across the UK the opportunity to study creative subjects at universities, colleges and cultural institutions, with practising professionals leading hands-on Masterclasses.
