Design Principles for National Infrastructure (NIC)
As a member of the National Infrastructure Commission's Design Group, Madeleine co-developed the UK's first Design Principles for National Infrastructure (Climate, People, Places and Value), launched in 2020 to set out a shared vision for infrastructure that delivers long-term environmental, social and economic value.
Endorsed by government and adopted by the National Infrastructure Strategy, the principles established a national framework for design excellence, encouraging every major infrastructure project to consider design as fundamental to long-term value rather than an aesthetic afterthought. They have since informed national policy, guidance for Design Champions, procurement frameworks and the development of the Project-Level Design Principles, helping embed design as a strategic process across infrastructure planning and delivery.
